   Стоп-кран

   Сорвали стоп-кран,
   всё затянуто мороком,
   не рассеется туман
   над притихшим городом.
  
   Люди - те же, время - то же,
   никуда не движемся.
   Песни-пляски - не спасают
   и экраны зависают
   с видом града Китежа [1].
  
   Поплавком размеренно
   вверх и вниз качаемся,
   но улова нет как нет -
   год который маемся.
  
   В этом ...надцатом году
   мы не ждём хорошего,
   наши беды не уйдут -
   с головою заметут
   шебутной порошею.

   1. град Китеж: По легенде, это город в Нижегородской области, ставший, по молитвам его жителей, невидимым для орды хана Батыя (в XIII веке); по другой версии - скрывшийся на дне озера Светлый Яр, но существующий до сих пор.

   The stop cock

   The stop cock is off,
   everything's obscure in the evendim [1],
   the mist over the city enfolded in silence
   won't clear away.
  
   The people are the same, the times are the same,
   we aren't moving anywhere.
   Singing&dancing can't help,
   and the screens have stuck
   showing an image of the town of Kitezh [2].
  
   Like a fishing buoy,
   we bob steadily
   but there's no catch whatever -
   though we're toiling at it year in year out.
  
   As to this ...teenth year,
   there aren't any good expectations,
   our troubles won't disappear -
   they'll cover us wholly
   with the blusterous snowfall.

   1. evendim: From J. R. R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" (1937-1977): "evendim" is a Hobbitish name to refer to the dusk of the evening. The name is composed by an element for "evening", and "dim" which refers to dusk / gloaming.
  
   2. the town of Kitezh: According to the legend, that is a town in the Nizhny Novgorod Region which, through the prayers of its inhabitants, became invisible to the horde of Batu Khan (in the 13th century); according to another version - it escaped to the bottom of the Svetly Yar, and still stays hidden at the bottom of the lake.
