Arthur O"Shaughnessy A Whisper from the Grave

1: My Life points with a radiant hand,
2: Along a golden ray of sun
3: That lights some distant promised land,
4: A fair way for my feet to run:
5: My Death stands heavily in gloom,
6: And digs a soft bed in the tomb
7: Where I may sleep when all is done.

8: The flowers take hold upon my feet;
9: Fair fingers beckon me along;
10: I find Life's promises so sweet
11: Each thought within me turns to song:
12: But Death stands digging for me-lest
13: Some day I need a little rest,
14: And come to think the way too long.

15: O seems there not beneath each rose
16: A face?-the blush comes burning through;
17: And eyes my heart already knows
18: Are filling themselves from the blue,
19: Above the world; and One, whose hair
20: Holds all my sun, is coming, fair,
21: And must bring heaven if all be true:

22: And now I have face, hair, and eyes;
23: And lo, the Woman that these make
24: Is more than flower, and sun, and skies!
25: Her slender fingers seem to take
26: My whole fair life, as 'twere a bowl,
27: Wherein she pours me forth her soul,
28: And bids me drink it for her sake.

29: Methinks the world becomes an isle;
30: And there-immortal, as it seems-
31: I gaze upon her face, whose smile
32: Flows round the world in golden streams:
33: Ah, Death is digging for me deep,
34: Lest some day I should need to sleep
35: And solace me with other dreams!

36: But now I feel as though a kiss
37: Of hers should ever give me birth
38: In some new heaven of life-long bliss;
39: And heedlessly, athwart my mirth,
40: I see Death digging day by day
41: A grave; and, very far away,
42: I hear the falling of the earth.

43: Ho there, if thou wilt wait for me
44: Thou Death!-I say-keep in thy shade;
45: Crouch down behind the willow tree,
46: Lest thou shouldst make my love afraid;
47: If thou hast aught with me, pale friend,
48: Some flitting leaf its sigh shall lend
49: To tell me when the grave is made!

50: And lo, e'en while I now rejoice,
51: Encircled by my love's fair arm,
52: There cometh up to me a voice,
53: Yea, through the fragrance and the charm;
54: Quite like some sigh the forest heaves
55: Quite soft-a murmur of dead leaves,
56: And not a voice that bodeth harm:

57: O lover, fear not-have thou joy;
58: For life and love are in thy hands:
59: I seek in no wise to destroy
60: The peace thou hast, nor make the sands
61: Run quicker through thy pleasant span;
62: Blest art thou above many a man,
63: And fair is She who with thee stands:

64: I only keep for thee out here-
65: O far away, as thou hast said,
66: Among the willow trees-a clear
67: Soft space for slumber, and a bed;
68: That after all, if life be vain,
69: And love turn at the last to pain,
70: Thou mayst have ease when thou art dead.

71: O grieve not: back to thy love's lips
72: Let her embrace thee more and more,
73: Consume that sweet of hers in sips:
74: I only wait till it is o'er;
75: For fear thou'lt weary of her kiss,
76: And come to need a bed like this
77: Where none shall kiss thee evermore.

78: Believe each pleasant muttered vow
79: She makes to thee, and see with ease
80: Each promised heaven before thee now;
81: I only think, if one of these
82: Should fail thee-O thou wouldst need then
83: To come away right far from men,
84: And weep beneath the willow trees.

85: And, therefore, have I made this place,
86: Where thou shouldst come on that hard day,
87: Full of a sad and weary grace;
88: For here the drear wind hath its way
89: With grass, and flowers, and withered tree-
90: As sorrow shall that day with thee,
91: If it should happen as I say.

92: And, therefore, have I kept the ground,
93: As 'twere quite holy, year by year;
94: The great wind lowers to a sound
95: Of sighing as it passes near;
96: And seldom doth a man intrude
97: Upon the hallowed solitude,
98: And never but to shed a tear.

99: So, if it be thou come, alas,
100: For sake of sorrow long and deep,
101: I-Death, the flowers, and leaves, and grass-
102: Thy grief-fellows, do mourn and weep:
103: Or if thou come, with life's whole need
104: To rest a life-long space indeed,
105: I too and they do guard thy sleep.

106: Moreover, sometimes, while all we
107: Have kept the grave with heaviness,
108: The weary place hath seemed to be
109: Not barren of all blessedness:
110: Spent sunbeams rest them here at noon,
111: And grieving spirits from the moon
112: Walk here at night in shining dress.

113: And there is gazing down on all
114: Some great and love-like eye of blue,
115: Wherefrom, at times, there seem to fall
116: Strange looks that soothe the place quite through;
117: As though indeed, if all love's sweet
118: And all life's good should prove a cheat,
119: They knew some heaven that might be true.

120: -It is a tender voice like this
121: That comes to me in accents fair:
122: Well; and through much of love and bliss,
123: It seemeth not a thing quite bare
124: Of comfort, e'en to be possest
125: Of that one spot of earth for rest,
126: Among the willow trees down there.

From "An Epic of Women", 1871

Arthur O"Shaughnessy Seraphitus

1: Alas ! we should not have known,
2: For all his strange ethereal calm,
3: And thoughts so little like our own
4: And presence like a shed-forth balm,
5: He was some Spirit from a zone
6: Of light, and ecstasy, and psalm,
7: Radiant and near about God's throne:
8: Now he hath flown!
9: The heaven did cleave on him alv; ( ? ply ? -
10: And for what thing he chose to dwell
11: In a mere tenement of clay
12: With mortal seeming-who can tell?
13: But there in some unearthly way
14: He wrought, and, with an inner spell,
15: Miraculously did array
16: That house of clay.
17: The very walls were in some sort
18: Made beautiful, with many a fresque
19: Or carven filigree of Thought,
20: Now seen a clear and statuesque
21: Accomplishment of dreams-now sought
22: Through many a lovely arabesque
23: And metaphor, that seemed to sport
24: With what it taught.
25: Most bright and marvellously fair
26: Those things did seem to all mankind;
27: And some indeed, with no cold stare
28: Beholding them, could lift their mind
29: Through sweet transfigurement to share ( ? -
30: Their inward light: the rest were blind,
31: And wondered much, yet had small care
32: Whence such things were.
33: And, day by day, he did invent
34: -As though nought golden were enough,
35: In manner of an ornament-
36: Some high chivalrous deed, above
37: All price, whereof the element
38: Was the most stainless ore of Love;
39: A boundless store of it he spent
40: With lavishment.
41: And when therewith that house became
42: All in a strange sort glorified;
43: For through whole beauty, as of flame,
44: Those things, resplendent far and wide,
45: Did draw unto them great acclaim;
46: Lo, many a man there was who tried
47: With base alloys to do the same,
48: And gat men's shame.
49: But all about that house he set
50: A wondrous flowering thing-his speech,
51: That without ceasing did beget
52: Such fair unearthly blossoms, each
53: Seemed from some paradise, and wet
54: As with an angel's tears, and each
55: Gave forth some long perfume to let
56: No man forget.
57: A new delicious music erred
58: For ever through the devious ways
59: Tangled with blooming of each word;
60: As though in that enchanted maze
61: Some sweet and most celestial bird
62: Were caught, and, hid from every gaze,
63: Did there pour forth such song as stirred
64: All men who heard.
65: Before him was perpetual birth
66: Of flowers whereof, aye, more and more,
67: The world begetteth a sad dearth;
68: And those rare balms man searcheth for,
69: Fair ecstasy, and the soul's mirth:
70: Half grudgingly the angels bore
71: That one should waste on a lost earth
72: Things of such worth.
73: It may be, with a strange delight,
74: After an age of gazing through
75: That mirror of things infinite
76: That well nigh burns the veil of blue
77: Drawn down between it and our sight-
78: It may be, with a joy all new,
79: He sought the darkness and the light
80: Of day and night.
81: It may be, that, upon some wave
82: Which through the incense-laden skies
83: Scarce forced its ripple, there once clave
84: A thin earth-fragrance-in such wise
85: It smote his sense and made him crave
86: For that strange sweet: maybe, likewise,
87: The leaves their subtle perfume gave
88: Up from some grave:
89: And pleasant did it seem to heap
90: About the heart dim spells that lull
91: Profoundly between death and sleep,
92: To feel mid earthly soothings, dull
93: And sweet, upon the whole sense creep
94: The dream-life-long and wonderful,
95: That hath all souls of men to keep
96: Lest they should weep.
97: But often, when there seemed to fall
98: Bright shadows of half-blindness, thin,
99: And like fine films wrought over all
100: The flashing sights of Heaven within;
101: While that fair perishable wall
102: Of flesh so barred and shut him in
103: That scarce a silver spirit-call
104: Reached him at all-
105: O then the Earth failed not to bring,
106: Indeed through many a day and eve-
107: The strength of all her flowering
108: About him; nor forgot to weave,
109: With soft perpetual murmuring,
110: Her spells, that such a sweet way grieve,
111: And hold the heart to each fair thing,
112: Yea, with a sting:
113: And, sometimes, with strange prevalence
114: He felt those dim enchantments float
115: Most soothingly upon his sense;
116: While faint in memory remote,
117: Brought down the heart knew not from whence,
118: The thought of heaven within him smote-
119: And many a yearning did commence
120: Vague and intense-
121: Fair part of that unknown disease
122: Of dull material love, whereby
123: The luring flower-semblances
124: Of earthliness and death would try
125: To bind his heart beyond release
126: To each fair mortal sympathy,
127: That Death at length might wholly seize
128: Him with all these.
129: And, surely, on some shining bed
130: Of flowers in full summer's gleam;
131: Or when the autumn time had shed
132: Its wealth of perfume and its dream
133: On some rich eve-no thing of dread
134: To all his spirit did it seem,
135: To dream on, feeling sweet earth spread
136: Over his head.

137: But, one long twilight-hushed and dim-
138: The blue unfathomable clime
139: Of heaven seemed wholly to o'erbrim
140: With presence of the Lord-sublime;
141: And voices of the Seraphim
142: Fell through the ether like a chime:
143: He rose: his past way seemed to him
144: Like a child's whim.

The stars are dimly seen among the shadows of the bay,
And lights that win are seen in strife with lights that die away.
The wave is very still -- the rudder loosens in our hand,
The zephyr will not fill our sail and waft us to the land;
O precious is the pause between the winds that come and go,
And sweet the silence of the shores between the ebb and flow.
No sound but sound of rest is on the bosom of the deep,
Soft as the breathing of a breast serenly hushed with sleep:
Lay by the ear; there is a voice at heart to sing or sigh --
O what shall be the choice of barcarolle or lullaby?
Say shall we sing of day or night, fair land or mighty ocean,
Of any rapturous delight or any dear emotion,
Of any joy that is on earth, or hope that is above--
The holy country of our birth, or any song of love?
Our heart in all our life is like the hand of one who steers
A bark upon an ocean rife with dangers and with fears;
The joys, the hopes, like waves or wings, bear up this life of ours --
Short as a song of all these things that make up all its hours.
Spread sail! For it is Hope today that like a wind new-risen
Doth waft us on a golden wing towards a new horizon,
That is the sun before our sight, the beacon for us burning,
That is the star in all our night of watching and of yearning.
Love is this thing that we pursue today, tonight, for ever,
We care not whither, know not who shall be at length the giver:
For Love, -- our life and all our years are cast upon the waves;
Our heart is as the hand that steers; -- but who is He that saves?
We ply with oars, we strive with every sail upon our mast --
We never tire, never fail -- and Love is seen at last:
A low and purple mirage like a coast where day is breaking --
Sink sail! for such a dream of Love is lost before the waking.

Arthur O"Shaughnessy Thought

There is no place at all by night or day,
Where I - who am of that hard tyrant Thought
The slave - can find security in aught,
But He, almighty, reaching me, doth lay

His hand upon me there, so rough a way
Assaulting me, - however I am caught,
Walking or standing still - that for support
I sometimes lean on anything I may:

Then when he hath me, ease is none from him
Till he do out his strength with me; cold sweat
Comes o"er my body and on every limb;

My arm fall weak as from a fierce embrace;
And, ere he leaveth me, he will have set
A great eternal mark upon my face.

Arthur O"Shaunessy Lost blisses

1: THINK, O Heart, what sweet-had you waited
2: A moment, on such a day-
3: Had yet been to do or to say
4: That shall never be said now or done!
5: Think what beautiful worlds uncreated
6: The clouds then bore back to the sun;
7: What blisses were all frustrated;
8: What loves, that were almost begun!
9: Think, O Life,-had your stream but drifted
10: To this or that holier Past,
11: Or Future that must come at last-
12: Think, O sorrowful Life, and repent-
13: How the sorrowful days had been gifted
14: With solace and ravishment,
15: And year after year slowly lifted
16: To heavens of golden content!
