Artsyz. An essay on geographical and historical associations.

Artsyz. An essay on geographical and historical associations.

From what concepts did the geographical name "Artsyz" come from?

We turn to the Explanatory Dictionary of Vladimir Dal.

"АРСА, ARSA, artsa ..., a kind of dry cheese, cottage cheese... (Bashkir cheese) ..."

"АРСА, ARSA, juniper. (Juniper vodka, infused or distilled on juniper berries.) "

"АРЧА, ARCHA, fees or conditional payments for reindeer riding; archak - guide, drover, coachman with reindeer."

"ХАРЦЫЗ, KHARTSYZ ... connecting rod, dragger, thief."

Trying to connect these concepts gives the advantage to two meanings:

  (1) A place where dry cheese is produced.

  (2) The place where caravans are formed and from where they go.

  Let's turn to the map.

First we find Artsyz, then Khartsyzk, then Arkhyz (Арциз, затем Харцизск, далее - Архыз).

All three points are located in the Azov-Black Sea region. All three points are located at a moderate distance from the sea coast.

Dry cheese could be produced in settlements outside the Azov-Black Sea region and at a considerable distance from the sea coast.

The advantage is given to "The place where caravans are formed and from where they go".

[Artsyz was founded in 1816 by German colonists who moved from Württemberg. [An example of the classic historical style of the Karamzin's "The History" and of Emperor Alexander I.] German settlers originally from Württemberg called their colony Johanneshort [Йоханнесхорт] - "John's fortress". The colony was renamed in 1819 in accordance with decree of Emperor Alexander I, who ordered that all German and other settler colonies be named in honor of the victories in the war against Napoleon. The settlement got its name from the French city of Arcis-sur-Aube, near which in March 1814 the allied forces (Russian, Austrian and Bavarian) defeated the Napoleonic army on the river Aube. ]
