A story in three languages. A note on chapters 26 - 28 of the Nicholas Bogoslovskiy's book "Turgenev."

As a result of defeats in the war of 1870-1871, the regime of Napoleon III fell in France.

The family of Viardot and Turgenev return to France.

"Turgenev willingly provided all kinds of assistance to the emigrants, facilitated the publishing of their literary works in various magazines and newspapers, supplied money, worked for them in front of the French authorities, organized literary and musical mornings [events] to raise funds. At one of these "mornings" [events], which took place in Viardo 's house, the artist performed herself singing Tchaikovsky 's romances on Fet 's words. Lopatin, who was one of participants of such "morning" [event], recalled up that Pauline Viardot, who was of fifty years, performed romances with a strong, passionate feeling." (Here and further - quotes from the book by Nicholas Bogoslovskiy "Turgenev")..

'Talking once with publicist-populist S. N. Krivenko about Shchedrin, Ivan Sergeyevich [Turgenev] said:

'You know, sometimes it seems to me that all our literature now lies on his [Saltykov-Shchedrin's] shoulders.' Of course, there are good, talented people besides him, but he holds [supports] literature. '

'During his life abroad, Turgenev often met with many representatives of the most important European literatures.

But the closest creative and friendly ties arose with French realist writers - Gustave Flaubert, Edmond Goncourt, Alphonse Daudet, Émile Zola and Guy de Maupassant, who formed a close literary community.

Turgenev was especially often in their circle in the seventies when he moved from Baden-Baden to Paris. '

'After the Franco-Prussian war of 1870, around Flaubert united the most talented young French writers, the' grandsons of Balzac '- Émile Zola, Alphonse Daudet and Guy de Maupassant. Turgenev, through Flaubert, met them and joined the "circle of five." From time to time, writers in this circle met at artistic dinners, which were called either Flaubert's dinners, or booed authors 'dinners, that is, writers who were ever sharply attacked by critics or the public.'

'In the seventies and at the beginning of the eighties, Turgenev especially actively contributed to the convergence of Russian and Western European literature and, above all, French. Thanks to his assistance, translations into French, English, German languages of the works of Pushkin, Gogol, Krylov, Lermontov, Saltykov-Shchedrin, Pisemsky appeared. To some editions he gave forewords, popularizing abroad the best works of Russian literature.

On the other hand, he sought to promote the works of Flaubert, Zola, Maupassant, Heine and other writers in Russian magazines. '

Turgenev spent the winters on the top floor of the house he and Viardot had acquired.

'In the summer he usually moved to Bougival, near Paris, where Viardot's estate was located - 'Ash', next to which in a picturesque park he had a cozy, small cottage, in flowers and greenery.'

Reconciliation of Turgenev with Nekrasov and Leo Tolstoy took place.

'In June 1878, representatives of all European literatures, who had gathered at the international exhibition in Paris for the international literary congress, unanimously elected Turgenev as their vice president.'

'Turgenev dictated the story 'The End' in French, German and Italian. After a few short sessions, [madame] Viardot read him a consolidated version in French, and he was pleased and satisfied with the story. '

'On August 22 (September 3) [1883], at two o 'clock in the afternoon, Turgenev died in Bougival. Dying far away from his homeland, he asked to be buried in St. Petersburg, at the Volkov Cemetery, near Belinsky ... "
