Jimmy Carter and his successes. A culturological note.
During my studies at Rostov University, such situations sometimes arose. One man was saying to another, "Do you want to go to Afghanistan?". This question was accompanied by a steadfast gaze. Then was a slight pause. This question usually remained unanswered. The answer was clear without words.
There wasn't much information about Afghanistan back then. "A fulfilling of an international duty."
What is "international duty "? It's possible to speculate on this topic.
What was the goal? Should hospitals, bridges, and industrial objects be built in every locality? And then what? One of Leo Tolstoy's biographies tells about Tolstoy's proposal to one of the peasants (who lived in a primitive wooden emergency house): move to a new (brick? stone?) a modern house built at Tolstoy's expense. The peasant firmly refused.
I am not familiar with a document that clearly describes the idea and plan of the "Afghan campaign." There seems to be a little-understood draft of protocol left, drawn up by several members of the Politburo.
Very often the names of several Asian countries, as well as "instructors", "Stingers" were mentioned then. A popular photo was of a man in local national clothes standing on top of a mountain and holding a Stinger (an American man-portable air-defense system) in his hands.
As far as I remember, there were no mentions of the US military personnel when describing specific events.
President Jimmy Carter (October 1, 1924 - December 29, 2024) reacted quite peacefully to the events in Afghanistan, in Iran, to other events.
What are the results?
Soviet troops were withdrawn from Afghanistan, the hostages (employees of the US Embassy in Iran) were returned to their homeland, the United States became one of the powerful oil and gas producing powers (so, largely safe from international energy crises).
Thus, Jimmy Carter's success was (in) the effective avoidance (evasion) of unnecessary and costly actions.
Jimmy Carter left behind, as I understand from media reports, humanitarian organizations. In these (private) organizations and in state archives, those (who wish) can get acquainted with many documents characterizing the activities of the administration of President Jimmy Carter.
May I (personally) review the draft of protocol (of the Politburo meeting) drawn up by several of its members? I guess I have some rights (according a law), but how exactly can I do that? To come to Moscow? To knock on the gate? To show my passport? To go to the archive? Or should I do something else: to hang a bag with my wish on the Christmas tree? An influential person will take this wish off the tree and will fulfill it - maybe? I have no opportunity to get acquainted with more relevant (for our era) documents. (There is probably a copy of this draft (of the protocol) in the electronic encyclopedia).
In the past (in the USSR) Jimmy Carter was written about in newspapers, his photos were published. I remember from that time that he was engaged in agriculture before he was elected president. And I remember his smile.
