Having eaten a good Belarusian-made cheese (with pasta), Lenya Bobrov went to the exhibition of paintings by Vasily Vereshchagin.
All the paintings are great!
But besides viewing the paintings, Lenya had a chance to witness an interesting incident.
An employee of one of the local newspapers arrived at the exhibition and demanded that the exhibition administration remove the painting "Alexander II near Plevna on August 30, 1877" from the exhibition.
Otherwise, the exhibition may be closed!
The newspaper employee motivated his ultimatum by the historical untimeliness of showing the emperor sitting in an armchair during the battle.
The administration of the exhibition started to worry.
Who needs extra trouble?
They invited an expert from the local pedagogical institute. The expert proposed to replace the painting "Alexander II near Plevna on August 30, 1877" with the painting "The Tsar's Name Day" ("Defeated. Memorial service for the dead").
However, there were specialists in the administration of the exhibition who recalled the scandal with the painting "The Tsar's Name Day" - a scandal involving Tsarevich Alexander Alexandrovich (the future Alexander III).
Finally, the director of the exhibition took responsibility and issued a statement: "The administration of the exhibition cannot agree to the demand to remove the painting "Alexander II near Plevna on August 30, 1877" from the exhibition, as this would mean a violation of the principles of freedom of artistic creativity."
Lenya examined all the paintings by Vasily Vereshchagin, received a beautiful booklet from the exhibition administration - free of charge, returned home and made material about the exhibition.
