LEO Destinations. Private space station and the film "Vyzov". A note on the history of space exploration.

LEO Destinations. Private space station and the film "Vyzov". A note on the history of space exploration.

On September 20, 2021 CNBC published an article by Michael Sheetz "NASA reviews private space station proposals, expects to save over $1 billion annually after ISS retires" (https://www.cnbc.com/2021/09/20/nasa-evaluating-private-space-station-proposals-for-iss -replacement.html)

From this material we learn that:

  1) NASA became convinced of the profitability of cooperation with private business.

(Spacecraft Crew Dragon saves the United States a significant means; earlier Roskosmos raised prices for flights of US astronauts and received very significant sums for these flights). "NASA last year estimated that the Commercial Crew program alone saved the agency between $20 billion and $30 billion ..."

  2) NASA plans to stop the ISS around 2028, and in return the ISS plans to use a private space station. This could potentially save the US $ 1 billion a year. The ISS now costs NASA about $ 4 billion a year. ("The space station [ISS] is approved to operate through the end of 2024, with a likely lifespan extension to the end of 2028. ").

(We do not have exact data on the costs of Russia for the maintenance of the ISS. The different figures are called. We have not read, for example, that the costs of the ISS are accounted for separately [in "separate table"] ... '... Russia is ready to spend 26.8 billion rubles a year on the maintenance of the ISS, which is approximately $ 360 million "[unofficial translation] (https://tass.ru/kosmos/2576981).

If Russia's costs for the ISS are in fact accounting separately [in "separate table"], and if indeed Russia spends about $ 360 million on the ISS, then its costs are about 10 times less than those of the United States.

  3) Preparatory work is needed to start the construction of a private space station. These works are carried out within the framework of the LEO Destinations project.

(LEO - the low Earth orbit.)

"Earlier this year, NASA unveiled the commercial LEO Destinations project, which plans to award contracts totaling up to $ 400 million with four companies to begin developing private space stations."

What conclusions can be drawn from this information?

First, Russia will soon lose funding from the United States not only for the purchase of seats on Soyuz spacecraft for the delivery of US astronauts to the ISS, but also for the maintenance of a permanently inhabited space station in near-earth orbit (low Earth orbit).

Secondly, the citizens of Russia can count on receiving such a valuable asset as the film "Vyzov" ("Вызов") ("Challenge").

"The ISS orbit will be lowered by 1.2 kilometers on Friday before the arrival of the "kino-crew"

MOSCOW, 24 Sep [2021] - RIA Novosti. The orbital altitude of the International Space Station (ISS) on Friday will be reduced by 1.2 kilometers before the arrival of the Soyuz MS-19 spacecraft with a crew in October to shoot the feature film "Vyzov" ("Challenge"), a spokesman of the Roscosmos press service told RIA Novosti. (...)

The launch of the Soyuz MS-19 spacecraft by the Soyuz-2.1a launch vehicle from the Baikonur cosmodrome is scheduled for October 5 [2021]. The members of the 66th expedition - cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov, director Klim Shipenko and actress Yulia Peresild - will go to the ISS on it to shoot the first feature film in space, tentatively titled "Vyzov" ("Вызов") ("Challenge").
