What if we look a little deeper?
Both the successes of Catherine the Great in the wars against the Ottoman Empire, and the successes of Nicholas The First in annexing the vast territories of Siberia and the Far East - it's an activity in alliance with the Great European Powers. First of all, with France (and Great Britain).
The rise of the role of the East-Republicans moved Russia towards a "European orientation", towards a "common European course".
The beginning of the 20th century was marked by Russia's military successes in the Far East - again in alliance with the Great European Powers.
The 20th century came into its own. But to replace the East-Republicans - Potemkin, Nevelsky, Przhevalsky ... - simpler people began to act.
Aleksandr Mikhailovich Bezobrazov, after whose name the "Bezobrazovskaya clique" was named, presented the Far East policy as a profitable financial project. And why they are needed, the Great European powers, - in the such a profitable project?
The result of such a simple view of the situation is the war between Russia and Japan (1904-1905).
